Client Spotlight // Megan Temple Design

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Megan in many capacities over the past four years—photographing her family portraits, professional headshots, and now, her client projects. Megan’s work is classy, eclectic, and spunky. We “sat down” for a virtual interview to celebrate her transition into a new role as a full-time freelancer.

There’s nothing I love more than starting with a blank slate.

What prompted your passion for design? Tell me about the moment when you decided this is the way to go.

Ha! This is a loaded question. I’ve had many moments along the way. I started doing interior design on the side as a creative outlet - mainly because friends kept asking for my help. Before I knew it, and because of total “dumb luck,” I had my first dream client lined up. Everything has organically spiraled from there.  Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t all been easy along the way, but I truly believe when things happen organically (without you having to force it,) it’s life moving you in the intended direction.

It finally came to a point where it was time to pick a direction— staying with my career in the footwear industry or taking the leap and focusing on my interior design business full-time. I loved my job in footwear, but I just felt in my gut I had come too far with my design business to let go. The vision of my life (for me, and my family) had changed.

What inspires you?

So many things! Shopping antiques, Instagram, flowers, the bones of a house, even an empty room. There’s nothing I love more than starting with a blank slate.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have some exciting projects right now. A new build in Glendale that is completely custom, with a client who is not afraid to be different. We have very similar styles, so that’s been a lot of fun!

I am also working on a kitchen & master bath renovation in a historic home in Webster Groves. The space has some quirks, so it’s pushed me to do some creative problem-solving, and I am so excited to see it come to life!

If you had no limits, what would you create?

Every design is 100% tailored to my client’s style & vision, so I’ve never actually thought about this! I’ve been obsessing over indoor/outdoor living spaces lately, so I would love to create one. I’m envisioning black & white marble floors, several French doors that open to a beautifully tiled patio…. hydrangeas galore and upholstered outdoor furniture in a fun print- perfect for entertaining!

What piece has been your favorite “find” so far?

Jeannie, what’s up with all these hard questions?! I’m a hoarder, so I have a lot of favorite finds. My most favorite pieces are always found at an antique or vintage store, never new. I recently scored a black wooden bench from South Jefferson MCM for $25, and I’m obsessed with it. I was going to put it in my daughter’s room, and then decided I just had to keep it for myself. I am having the cushion re-covered in a fun print from a boutique textile company named Flat Vernacular.

Do you tend to start with an overall vision for a space and then choose pieces that complement it, or do you find inspired pieces first and base the room around those?

I always start with one piece and then build the design around that. It’s either a favorite item of the client’s or sometimes it’s a piece I find along the way. I recently purchased two pieces of art from Future Ancestor and built an entire bathroom design around them.

How would you describe your style?

I am pretty eclectic. I like to mix things up and take things one step further than my client’s comfort level. Creating a room that feels finished is just like the rule of jewelry: put on all your favorite pieces, and then take one piece off.

What’s your biggest design pet peeve?

The first thing I notice is when things are not to scale. Also, when art is hung too high.

Do you have a favorite designer?

I especially love following the work of Kelly Hopter Interiors, and then all of the usual suspects: Studio McGee, Becki Owens, Joanna Gaines. There are so many amazing designers to aspire to!

What’s your favorite color palette?

I personally love black & white; it’s timeless. I like to change things up often, so having a neutral base and then mixing in color in an inexpensive way (throw pillows, vase, etc.) keeps things versatile and affordable.

What’s your favorite part about working with clients?

My absolute favorite part is seeing my clients’ eyes light up when they start to see changes happening in their home. We spend so much of our lives at home that we should love it and we should be proud of it! Seeing my clients’ shift from frustration with a room to complete excitement and pride is so much fun!

Is there something you’d like prospective clients to know about your business?

The most common thing I hear is that hiring an interior designer can be intimidating…and it definitely can be! But it doesn’t have to be. My motivation is to create a space that YOU love. That means your style, your goals, and within your budget. Of course, I will push you to try new things, or to see things in a new way- but ultimately, I am designing a room for you. Don’t be hesitant to schedule an intro call with a designer (or a few designers) to find the best match for you.
